Debuting on the charts this week ...
No, you're not dreaming. The UT-Martin Skyhawks are ranked in both the top 25 polls we follow here at the blog. The OVC Web site says it's the first time in school history. The Sports Network has them at #22, and the AnyGivenSaturday.com fan poll has them at #23. The ranking comes a week after Martin defeated then #25 Jacksonville State 24-14. They defeated Austin Peay State on Saturday, 20-10. They are the fourth OVC to appear in the top 25 polls this season.
Eastern Illinois held steady as the OVC's top-ranked team at #20 in the TSN poll, following a 44-9 loss at Hawai'i. The Panthers dropped a spot from #18 to #19 in the AGS poll.
In the others receiveing votes categories, Jacksonville State picked up 60 points in the TSN poll for 31st place, 9 points in the AGS poll for 33rd place. Southeast Missouri picked up its first votes of the year in the TSN poll, with 5 points for 45th place.
While JSU's shutout of Eastern Kentucky didn't impress pollsters enough to earn a ranking, Gamecocks earned three of the four OVC Player of the Week honors. Running back Clay Green is the offensive honoree, linebacker LeMarcus Rowell was honored on defense, and punter Zach Walden earned the nod on special teams. Tennessee Tech freshman quarterback Lee Sweeney is the league's newcomer of the week.
