Runnin' and runnin'

Matt Dougherty of The Sports Network gave a little love to the OVC this week in his roundup of the best running backs in I-AA. JSU's Clay Green and UTM's Donald Chapman made the top 15, at #9 and #10, respectively. EIU's Vincent Webb was #20, and Mark Dunn of EKU was #24. Read the whole column here.

Oh, and last week Matt rated I-AA quarterbacks for the upcoming season. EKU's Josh Greco was the OVC's lone man on the list, at the lofty #8 spot.

It was good to see the OVC runningbacks mentioned and deservedly so. But, I was a little disappointed that EIU's Webb was as far down the list. Pre-season lists don't mean a thing, though. Got to show it on the field.

EIU note - A defensive end from the University of Illinois has transferred to EIU (Sobol). He was a redshirt freshman last year so he will have three years remaining to play for EIU. That was the one area that I think EIU was a little thin.

fl connection - Do you know about any other transfers or anything about the new players listed on the EIU spring roster? On the bad side, do you know of any non-senior players that won't be coming back? (I only know of Nichols.)

WR transfers- Micah Rucker 6'6 220 from U of Minnesota, Corey Sanders 6'5 200 from Dodge City CC.

LB- Matt Westrick 6'0 240 from JC power Grossmont JC

DE- Donovan Johnson 6'2 230 from Arkansas.

DT Branden Daniel 6'3 295 from U of Florida.

Not usually a place for transfers, may have hit jackpot in a run for national title.

fl connection - I am impressed. I had heard about Rucker but none of the others. Hard to get news on EIU football, so I appreciate the news.

As you said, EIU usually doesn't get transfers and these guys look like they will be contributing right away. I could not find any info on Corey Sanders, though.

Since you know your EIU football...
Who do you think will be the QB next season? Donato doesn't make mistakes but Stinson seems to have some big upside potential.

I don't hear anything about Andre Brown. I heard he is a good athlete. Any chance that he will have a position change so he can get on the field?

thanks again

I was the first anonymous and did not notice that one of the responses was from a different anonymous & not fl connection. Good to know that there are some interested EIU football fans.

Good point about the transfers needing to fit into the team. I think that is one reason Spoo has been hesitant in that area in the past. However, they seem to be filling specific needs and are in areas where we need help. This year's recruiting class was small so this list of transfers really adds to my optimism.

Can't wait for the season.

Hot, and getting hotter, Connection. Just waiting around for football season to start, mostly, and looking forward to a little fall weather. That should get here by November.
