Saturday - Gameday news
It's finally here folks! The rest of the OVC swings into action today. I'm on the road in Greenville, S.C., but posting these morning news items has become something of a habit, so here goes:
The (Clarksville, Tenn.) Leaf Chronicle says both Austin Peay State and Southeast Missouri State are hoping to begin turnaround seasons today. Neither team has had a winning season since 2002, and incidentally, that's the last time either team won a season opener. That's one thing at least that's sure to change today.
Four items from the (Charleston, Ill.) Journal Gazette/Times-Courier this morning. One previews Eastern Illinois' and Illinois' expected game plans heading into their opener today. Another looks more at the intangible expectations for each team. The paper also profiles WR Micah Rucker, a transfer from Minnesota. There's also a helpful traffic guide for fans making the trip to Champaign.
The St. Louis Post Dispatch lists 5 things to watch in the EIU-Illinois game. They predict a 35-17 Illinis victory.
The Lexington Herald-Leader says Eastern Kentucky picked the perfect opponent in Cincinnati for its I-A guarantee game this season.
The (Cincinnati) Enquirer, meanwhile, says UC will be looking protect its quarterback from the Colonels. Oh, and apparently EKU doesn't have any respect for the Bearcats.
The Cincinnati Post also says EKU isn't going to sneak up on UC. One Bearcat says he's "scared of this game."
The Birmingham (Ala.) News replays last year's heartbreaking loss by Jacksonville State to Furman one more time, this time through the eyes of JSU QB Matt Hardin. Today in Greenville, S.C., it'll be Harding starting under center for the Gamecocks.
The Huntsville (Ala.) Times says Tennessee State will largely be a mystery to Alabama A&M when the neams take the field today in Nashville, much as the Bulldogs were last year, when A&M pulled out a 27-14 victory.
The Murray (Ky.) Ledger & Times briefly entertains the notion that Murray State will enjoy some sort of advantage in today's opener against Missouri.
The Southeast Missourian says SEMO coach Tony Samuel sees reason for optimism in the team's returning senior starters. There are 11 of them.
The (Nashville) Tennessean says Tennessee State quarterback Antonio Heffner, a transfer from South Carolina, doesn't know what the Tigers' offense was like last year. And he doesn't care.
The Jackson (Tenn.) Sun compares new UT-Martin head coach Jason Simpson to his opponent today, Ohio's Frank Solich.
