Wednesday news

Here's what's online this morning:

The (Clarksville, Tenn.) Leaf Chronicle says running back Spencer Gulmire was one of 11 Austin Peay State freshman who saw playing time in Saturday's 38-13 loss to Southeast Missouri State. The Govs take on NAIA Cumberland this week.

The (Charleston, Ill.) Journal Gazette/Times-Courier reiterates today that senior linebacker Clint Sellers is out indefinitely with a should injury. The story then runs down a list of items from yesterday's media conference call with OVC coaches; among them: Tennessee State Coach James Webster's feeling that Murray State wil be a much easier opponent this week that EIU, Eastern Kentucky or Jacksonville State.

The Richmond (Ky.) Register looks at one local high school graduate who's done the unthinkable: signed to play at Western Kentucky. WKU Freshman Ronnie Letcher may see some playing time when the Hilltoppers visit EKU in the Battle of the Bluegrass on Saturday.

The Anniston (Ala.) Star (sorry, subscribers only) says JSU coach Jack Crowe may play more offensive and defensive starters on the special teams units when the Gamecocks return to the field next week against SEMO. The Star notes that's what got EIU's Sellers injured; he took a shot to the shoulder on Saturday's opening kickoff.

The Southeast Missourian says SEMO coach Tony Samuel is happy his team won Saturday, but after looking at the game tape he's not quite as happy with the Redhawks' performance as he might have been. The paper leads a roundup of other league news with a look at JSU's narrow loss to #4 Furman.

The (Nashville) Tennessean says Avern Alexander, a starting right tackle, is out for the rest of Tennessee State's season after breaking his ankle in the opener against Albama A&M. Haven't seen anything in this paper about TSU's consideration of a new stadium and a move to the SWAC.

The Nashville City Paper, meanwhile, says TSU coach James Webster takes some encouragement away from the 27-20 loss to A&M - he's glad his team can play with what looked like a quality squad.
